20-Year-Old Cars And Bikes Face Double Re-Registration Fees; Imports To Pay A Heavier Price

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has doubled the re-registration fees for vehicles that are 20 years or older. Re- registration of made-in-India cars will now cost double

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has announced a revision in the registration renewal fees for two- and four-wheelers that are 20 years old or older. As part of its push to curb pollution, the government is incentivising vehicle upgrades by making it costlier to keep older vehicles on the road. Owners will now have to either re-register at a higher cost or consider replacing their vehicles. Cars and bikes aged between 15 and 20 years will see no change in renewal fees. Owners of cars that were produced before 2005, which do not meet BSII emission norms, are being pushed to upgrade.

The fee has increased from ₹5,000 to ₹10,000 for made-in-India cars, and from ₹1,000 to ₹2,000 for made-in-India bikes and scooters. The cost of renewing the registration of imported 20-year-old cars has seen a steep rise from ₹40,000 to ₹80,000, while the cost of re-registering old imported two-wheelers will now range from ₹10,000 to ₹20,000.
