Indian spices are the best ingredients for winters, giving our food incredible tastes, aromas and colours during this vapid season. It might be starting to get colder, but there are some wonderful winter spices that will keep you warm.
Here are three of them:
1. Cloves: Cloves is from an evergreen tree and offers year-round benefits. It has a strong smell of pepper and can leave a numbing sensation – for those reasons it is typically used very conservatively to avoid overpowering the flavours in a dish. During the winter months’ cloves are known to improve blood circulation, clear respiratory passages and maintain a healthy digestive system.
2. Cardamom: Referred to as the “Queen of Spices” in India, cardamom can be sourced in both brown and green forms – the latter of which is typically used as a winter spice. It is fragrant, warming and can be used in a variety of drinks and dishes, including tea, rice and pumpkin soup.
3. Cumin Seeds: Cumin seeds have a distinctive flavour and aroma. An excellent source of iron, they are often used in homemade face creams and hair masks for a natural, healthy glow. At winter, cumin seeds are best enjoyed in stews and soups for an earthy warmth.
