New Delhi, April 12: After taking over Indian telecom industry, Mukesh Ambani led Reliance Jio is reported to bring a laptop with SIM card to the Indian markets, which could prove to be the next big thing by Jio in Indian markets.
As per reports, Reliance Jio is in talks with US chip major Qualcomm to launch laptops with Windows 10 OS and inbuilt cellular connections in the Indian markets. If Qualcomm is concerned then the company is already working with Jio for their feature phones.
We are in talks with Jio, they could take the device and offer it with data and content, Miguel Nunes, senior director( product management) Qualcomm Technologies told media.
The chipmaker is also in talks with Smartron to bring the Snapdragon 835-powered laptops with cellular connectivity. Smartron confirmed the reports.
As per data, approximately five million laptops are sold every year in India and most of them connect by either enterprise or home or public WiFi spots.
So if operators can connect a million laptops ( 20% of total sold in a year ) to a 4G network then they can charge users close to Rs 300 to Rs 1000 per month and it will also depend upon the usage or QoS for a “premium grade” data connection, looking this as business wise this could generate close to Rs 30 crore revenue per month, or close to Rs 360 crore per year or even more than Rs 1000 crore a year from these users.
