New Delhi, Oct 7: Bollywood has given us many love stories that have continued like folk lore’s for generations. Out of so many love stories the one which is talked about the most is the love story of yesteryear super-star Dharmendra and dream girl Hema Malini.
Hema Malini mesmerized everyone with her beauty and dance moves in the late 60s and 70s. She was the ‘dream girl’ of every Indian male while Dharmendra had also attained a great status in early 60s and 70s in Bollywood industry with many super hits. If Hema Malini is the Dream girl of Bollywood, Dharmndra is the original He-man of the film industry. Both of them had a huge fan-following.
How cupid struck a happily married man and a much younger woman?
According to reports, Dharmendra and Hema Malini fell in love with each other on the sets of the movie 'Tum Haseen Main Jawan'.
It is said that Hema was not keen to reciprocate to Dharmendra as she was unwilling to settle down with an already married man with two children. But destiny had something else in store for Dharmendra and Hema and against many odds they ultimately fell in love and tied the nuptial knot in 1980.
Obstacles in the love life of Dharmendra and Hema
The biggest obstacle that Dharmendra and Hema faced in their love life was the marital status of Dharmendra. Garam Dharam's wife Prakash refused to divorce him and it left him with no option except changing the religion. Dharmendra and Hema Malini converted to Islam to unite with each other and give their love life a conclusive end. In Islam a person is allowed to marry more than once.
This is not the only obstacle that came in the way of Dharam and Dream Girl. Hema Malini's parents were strictly opposed to this marriage and asked her not to marry an already married man with three kids. The thought of changing the religion was totally unacceptable for Hema's parents.
Finally, marriage happened despite many odds
Finally, after the demise of her father, Hema decided to marry Dharmendra which hurt her mother badly. Hema and Dharmendra were madly in love with each other and changing the religion to be each other was not a big thing for them.
Dharmendra and Hema's Nikahnama read like this, "Dilawar Khan Kewal Krishn (44 years) accepted Aisha Bi R. Chakravarty (29 years) as his wife on 21 August 1979 at a mehr of Rs 111,000 in the presence of two legal witnesses."
For a long time the nikah was kept a secret and sometime later they married in Iyengar style as Hema Malini is an Iyengar.
Hema Malini and Dharmendra still after being married for 32 years continue to love each other deeply. According to Hema's biography she fell for Dharam as he was strong and silent like her mother. Hema still finds Dharam very romantic and says he still looks at her the way he did in their very first meeting.
Dharmendra and Hema have two daughters Esha and Ahana Deol. Both Esha Deol and Ahana Deol are happily married.
