Five-time IPL finalist Chennai Super Kings may have a new skipper next year. After losing the title to Mumbai Indians on Sunday night, CSK captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni said that next year there will be fresh auction for the players and who knows who would land up where. Dhoni’s statement is being seen as an indication of his dismay towards one of the most successful franchises of the Indian Premier League.
Even though Rajasthan Royals lost three of its players on charges of spot fixing during the IPL 6 matches, it’s CSK, whose reputation has taken a bigger beating. First, the team’s CEO and Principal Gurunath Meiyappan was arrested by the Mumbai police for his alleged role in cricket betting and later its owner, BCCI president N. Srinivasan is facing pressure to quit. While the BCCI boss has remained defiant, his defence has not been convincing for the cricket fans.
Amid the controversies, CSK’s credibility and morale has been badly affected, a result of which was evident during the IPL final at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Despite chasing a modest score, the brilliant Chennai team threw in the towel. If Dhoni decides to be available for the auction next year, he might find a suitable buyer in Mumbai Indians.
It would be worthwhile to mention Mumbai owner Nita Ambani having showered praises at the Indian skipper even when her team was defeated by CSK. And now that Sachin Tendulkar has announced his decision to quit the IPL, speculation is rife that the IPL 6 winners may grab the Chennai skipper in the next season.
Mumbai had bought Australian captain Ricky Ponting in the hope that he would successfully lead the T-20 side. However, his unimpressive form forced the franchise to give the crucial responsibility to Rohit Sharma. Even though the Delhi batsman ensured a victory for Mumbai, the franchise may switch to somebody more successful, like Dhoni, as skipper, who has often led from the front.
Sources tell this newspaper that Dhoni is disgruntled with the CSK ever since it was revealed that the vital information of the team was passed on to betters and bookies. He is also upset because his wife’s name was dragged into the murk after she was seen with actor Vindoo Dara Singh. So will Dhoni move to Mumbai in IPL 7, we would have to wait and watch.
