SHACKLES OF 35 YEARS SHOULD END

People who want to be free from the shackles of a 35-year-long vicious cycle of "domination", a day after accusing Left Front Government of not doing any development work in the state.

During his election campaign in West Bengal Modi said "I was surprised after what I saw in West Bengal. It was a whole new form of election there," Modi alleged that the Left Front government had not done any development work or set up any industry in West Bengal in its 34 year-rule. Three days before the victory of the West Bengal polls is declared, the Election Commission (EC) has already emerged as the winner, earning accolades for conducting one of the most peaceful elections in the politically volatile state. One of the most keenly watched polls in the state, conducted in six phases, concluded Tuesday peacefully without a single death or any incidence of grave violence.

Votes will be counted Friday. The by and large peaceful election was characterised by large turns up even in the Maoist-affected areas. Polling in the Maoist-affected areas of West Midnapore, Purulia and Bankura, popularly referred as Junglemahal, posed the biggest challenge for the security forces and the election authorities. Places like Salboni, Jhargram, Nayagram, Binpur, Joypur and Bandwan have witnessed shootings and killings related to rebel violence during the past two years.

The decisive battle in West Bengal to decide whether the Left Front will extend its 34-year-old rule or the Trinamool-Congress alliance grasp the power was finally sealed in the EVM’s , as the state recorded an overall turnup of around 83% during the assembly polls. The sixth and last phase of elections, which recorded 84.8% turnup during the day in 14 seats in the three Maoist-hit 'Junglemahal' districts of West Midnapore, Bankura and Purulia ended peacefully, as did the other five phases preceding it.
